APRIL
Of Art and Men
What is art? There’s is an innate knowing that probably differs from person to person, but really, what is art? We’ve learned it’s something exquisite and unobtainable for most, yet also something a child or caveman could do. It requires a highest skill - but also accidental (nature’s art). We’re told that art is everywhere, but best viewed in Louvre.
For as much ground art covers the word is rarely used. How many times a day person actually says “art”? Not many. We whisper it in a museum. Most people park it permanently after finishing high school, only dusting it off when their own kids become students. It is unless you’re an artist. Art is a great word to confuse the rest of the world with. It renders most talkative people speechless.
“And what you do for living?”
“I’m an artist”
“Oh”
“Yeah”
So what is art? What are the ingredients of this glorious soup? Is it an idea? Is it a skill? Talent? Occupation? God’s gift? Hard work’s achievement? Stroke of genius? Luck of the brave who claim the name of an artist for themselves, entering a battle with windmills of everyday-ness. A splinter of a feeling so beautifully painful you can’t sleep at night. Stars in your coffee, sunrises in your tea. Things words are too shallow for, and much more.
What I do for living? I breathe air and I make art. Yeah, seriously.
In a latest news - I'm taking part in group show “Yokai” at the beautiful Haven Gallery in Northport, NY. The opening is next weekend and you can email Erica info@havengallery.com for early preview. I promised not to share full images until opening day but there's no harm in some partial shots, right? and who has patience nowadays anyway. The tapestry I used is very old and frayed in spots and will keep aging in most nostalgic ways, and I used cashmere for bodies. Inspired by myths and legends of Japan, art of kintsugi, and longing for what once was…
May is shaping up to be a gorgeous yet very busy month, and it is also my birthday month so get ready to see a lot of photos of flowers from my garden and other unrelated nonsense in my stories!
Much love, until May
